TAKE ADVANTAGE OF
Leadership in the Firehouse:
Recruitment & Retention – Rescue & Recovery
[A CONVERSATION WITH TIGER SCHMITTENDORF]
We all know the harsh realities of the volunteer fire service: that the majority of the challenges our leaders face are back at the fire station – not on the fire scene.
This presentation and discussion will focus on the challenges we face, why we face them and how to effectively combat them.
Tiger Schmittendorf will share his “Top 10 Commandments for Recruitment and Retention” as well as his toolkits and other resources.
“Simply put, it’s my belief that the survival and success of the volunteer fire service relies on our ability to create more opportunities – for more people – to volunteer less time.”
Our success depends on our ability to plan for, lead and manage volunteers; whether we don’t have enough or we have more than we can handle. The possibilities for their involvement are only limited by our imagination.
A lot of volunteer fire departments are looking for a magic-wand solution to their recruitment and retention challenges. If that’s what they’re exptecting from this presentation, they’re going to be disappointed.
My goal is to change the mindset of the fire service as to how we address these issues and to offer a fresh perspective that we’ve had the solutions right in front of us all along. This is a street-level look at how we lead, manage and treat the single most important asset in the fire service: our people.
We can win this fight if we put our minds and hearts together in working towards a common goal.
I’m up to the challenge. Are you?
