Last year I decided to sign up for our county's honor guard. In our area, when a firefighter dies for whatever reason the family may request the honor guard to attend the calling hours.

The duty requires Class A uniforms, and consists of standing guard on either side of the casket; opening the doors of the funeral home for guests; standing on either side of the entrance hallway, inside or out; and so on.

It impresses the guests and the family is always extremely grateful.

I sometimes wondered why I chose to do this. Recently I found the answer: http://tigerschmittendorf.com/2009/01/thats-why/

As a result of working with Tom & Jessica Torpey I have realized that the firefighternation is truly bigger than any of us can imagine. Tom has recieved cards and letters from California to Wyoming besides all the cards from fire fighters and EMS personnel here in NY state. The brotherhood & sisterhood of firefighters is most visible in times of tragedy but the truth is a 24/7 365 thing.

Agreed all the way, 110%! Good job again Tiger! Please look at my discussions that I have started on the group pages of Hancock Hope and Ohio Firefighters on Firefighternation. I too have an issue with a downed firefighter that I do not know. John Seagraves told me about her and asked me to see what I could do to help her and her family. He made comment about the "brotherhood of firefighters" and asked if we "firemen" could get together and help out. I was proud to be a fireman at that moment and say I'm not sure if there is as he called it, "a brotherhood chapter of firemen in Ohio" but I'll try to sound some alarms that I know of! (meaning firefighternation). Please take a look and see if you can sound any more alarms and/or get a response out of what I've posted.

Thanks!
